Everett Troop Jan 2023
Another busy month! Christmas seems a long way back now as we have been busy this month as a troop.
It was great to see Scouts back in January, we have been joined over the Christmas break by several Cubs moving up which has been fantastic, we are in the process of changing round some of our patrols and in February will be promoting patrol leaders and assistant patrol leaders into their new roles.
We have said goodbye to a couple of our older scouts who have moved on to Explorers in the district, the great news is, they are staying with us as young leaders in beavers and squirrels, where they have been for several months now.
We have come back to really cold weather, which, in one way is fantastic, because it means that all the mud is frozen! But did add a different element to one of our evenings, making ash cakes on open fires! A great job by the Scouts, albeit some very cold fingers by the end of the session … We did give them all warning how cold it was recommended the use of gloves/hats/scarfs, but as usual, there were several of them who decided that they knew best!
The cakes were successful, it was fantastic to see our new members turning out the best cakes and everybody seem to enjoy the evening.
Another cold night, saw us out on the common playing wild games, this time everybody seems to take notice of the advice and wrapped up warm, brought a torch and had great fun running round of the pitch black,
Our first district event of 2023, took place on a cold Saturday a couple of weeks back, a team from Everett took out the challenge and competed against seven other teams for the stags head trophy, the stags head has been a yearly fixture in the scouting calendar and his hotly contested by scout troops across the district, this year was note different, and a great team performance by Andrew, Oliver, will, Jack and Leo saw them lift the trophy for Everett Troop! Fingers crossed this winning start continues as we book in for more of the district competitions this year
Early signs are that we are heading off to south Wales for a week’s camp this year, we are just waiting on confirmation from the site, but I think we are all looking forward to a trip along the M4 now, you never know, we might even go meet up with Gavin and Stacey at Barry Island!
And we have several weekend camps and activities planned for the next few months and looking forward to getting back out under canvas in the next few weeks!
Another bit of good news that happened over Christmas is that Tom, one of our young leaders turned 18 and, by the time you read, this would’ve been invested as a full adult leader! He does help with Cubs as well, but we know his true allegiance is to Everett troop! (Just don’t tell Kev and the leaders from Dyak) For many members of the troop, 2023 will see them venture off to South Korea or Europe for three weeks in the summer, I will be going along with a number of those scouts. I have to say that I’m really looking forward to the trip, this has been a long time in the planning, and we can’t wait to start our adventures in the summer! the fundraising for all the Scouts is going really well, they are working so hard with their parents, and it is great to see the fruits of all their hard work starting to pay off.
The scouts are looking forward to competing in the Wally Mansbridge trophy in a few weeks’ time, and evening orienteering exercise which pitches the Scouts from Stanley’s Own against the Guides! This is always a fantastic event and a trooper very much looking forward to it this year
We still have a few places on the Everett troop adventure…. Always happy to see new faces, come along and give us a try
